R.J. Gwynne donated the Shield in 1921 for play between Waikato Primary Schools. It is only recent times that it has been a competition for sub-union representative teams. Up until 1941 for example, there were teams such as Marist, Whitiora Primary School, Southwell and Morrinnsville District High School playing in the Competition.

Teams from Waipa and Mangakino have also won the shield, In 1974 there was a South Waikato team and just two Hamilton teams playing against other Waikato sub-union of Matamata, Cambridge, Te Awamutu and North Waikato.

In 1975 South Waikato was divided in the two present teams of Putaruru and Tokoroa and Hamilton was asked to enter a third team, Hamilton South.

THE BRIAN SPRAGGON MEMORIAL Secound place. Donated in the memory of Brian Spraggon who died tragically in 1976. Brian was for many years a coach of the South Waikato Gwynne Shield side and of the Waikato Rangers Roller Mills Team.

THE KEITH DAVID TROPHY Third place. Donated in 1978 by Mr. K. Davis, then President of the WPSRU Advisory Committee.

THE NZ BREWERIES TROPHY Highest Placed Hamilton Team. A trophy donated by N.Z. Breweries for Hamilton Primary Schools rugby competition, designated for recognising the Highest placed Hamilton team, in 1989.
